Interior Design Story – Residential Extension in Brunswick
For this residential extension in Brunswick, my clients wanted to extend an existing yellow brick Mid-Century Modern home on Glenlyon Road in Brunswick. The existing house had some great original features. From high ceilings to ornate cornices and generously sized bedrooms.
The project included an extension to the back and upstairs. The back extension including an open plan living area and upstairs a second living area in the landing, master bedroom with walk in robe and ensuite.
When I met the client they had architectural drawings and our initial discussion was about the floor plan. This led to our redraw of the kitchen and walk in pantry. From talking to the client about their goals I suggested the walk in pantry was too big.
Instead I suggested we add another bathroom to the ground floor. Make the main bathroom downstairs an ensuite with two entry/exit points and create invaluable storage cupboards. All without compromising the client’s goal to have a walk in pantry.
In terms of style the client was keen to create an aesthetic that was part Art Deco, part Mid-Century Modern and part Industrial. This was an interesting challenge. Based around an earthy colour palette of khaki, greige, walnut and black.
The focus for my design and specifications was to use materials synonymous with particular styles. For example, walnut and terrazzo for Mid-Century Modern. Black steel for Industrial and curved lines for the Art Deco element of the interior style goal.
What I created for this residential extension in Brunswick, was a stunning yet cosy aesthetic, while adding value to the property through highly functional spaces such as the kitchen, walk in pantry and two bathrooms on the ground floor.
