Residence, Blackburn North

Interior Design Story

My clients had moved from an apartment in Brunswick to a three bedroom residence in Blackburn North. They didn’t have enough furniture to fill the various spaces in their new home.  These clients also wanted to upgrade the quality of the furniture with a foundation of Mid-Century Modern style pieces.

A professional couple they wanted their home to reflect their individual interior style. Rather than a generic environment they wanted to create a deeply personal space they could be proud of.

Part of their brief was the knowledge that they would eventually start a family and that this was the right time to create a haven for them to come home to after a busy and often times stressful day of work.

Stylistically the focus was on creating a Mid-Century Modern foundation layered with eclectic décor, textures, patterns from global influences such as indigenous cultures, for example Aztec.

They also wanted highly functional and flexible spaces. For example in the lounge room, the key focal piece is a sofa that can pull out to become a bed for truly chilled stream binging or chilling with mates or overnight guests.

This is true also for the sitting zone in the open plan living area adjacent to the dining zone. A space for the couple to be together when one or the other is in the kitchen or a space for groups of mates to break out to when they have large gatherings. So flexible spaces for guests and future children as well hardy materials for cats, and kids was key to the brief also.

Overall the pieces present a classic Mid-Century Modern aesthetic and spaces that are personalised with an earthy colour palette and interesting and cultural patterns throughout.
